Stale or rancid food can turn a picky dog off and even make them sick. Here's how to store it right.
Why storage matters
Fats in kibble can go rancid, and heat, air, and moisture speed spoilage that dulls aroma and nutrition. Poor storage can also invite pantry moths, mold, or pests. Fresher food simply tastes better, which matters for finicky eaters.

Keep it in the bag
Store kibble in its original bag, which is designed to protect the fats, and place that bag inside an airtight container rather than pouring loose kibble in. The bag also carries the lot number and expiration date you'll need if there's ever a recall. Seal the top after each use.
Cool, dry, and airtight
Keep food in a cool, dry spot away from sunlight and humidity; a hot garage accelerates spoilage. Buy a bag size your dog finishes within about six weeks of opening. Wash and fully dry the storage container between bags to remove old, oxidized oils.
Handling wet food
Once opened, cover canned food and refrigerate it, using it within a couple of days. Don't leave wet food out at room temperature for long, as bacteria multiply quickly. Toss any food that smells off or looks discolored.
When food may be the problem
If your dog suddenly refuses a familiar food or has digestive upset, spoilage or a bad batch could be the cause. Check the expiration date and lot number, and contact your vet if symptoms continue.
